SPX Tigers Flex Their Track & Field Muscle: Win Girls AND Overall Titles St Elizabeth Saints Claim Boys Crown

The DPL held its Junior Varsity Track & Field Champ- ionship Meet on Saturday, April 12th, on a beautiful sun-splashed day at Bishop Lynch High School. Their wasn't much drama on the Girls side as SPX rolled to an impressive championship. The Lady Tigers featured an extremely deep and talented team which rolled to a record 154 point total. The St Rita Spartans closed the meet with a resounding win in the 4 x 400 to help them claim 2nd place with 82 points, while St Monica rode the back of their talented star to a 3rd place finish and 75 points.

Meanwhile, the St Elizabeth Saints snared the Boys title with consistent scoring performance throughout the field and track events. However, the SPX Tigers were nipping at the Saints heels throughout the entire meet with their eyes set on a Triple Crown (Boys, Girls, Overall). The Boys title came down to the final leg of the 4 x 400 relay with St Elizabeth coming from behind for the win, clinching the trophy with 103 points. SPX finished with 97 points and 2nd place while STA snagged 3rd with 65 points. POP had been awarded
the 3rd place boys spot with 62 points, but a re-count found an error which moves the Wildcats into 3rd. POP is to be congratulated as easily being the school with the most improved track program in the dPL thus far in 2003.

SPX claimed the Overall title by a sizeable margin, outdistancing St Monica (2nd), and STA (3rd). Again, the scoring error adjusted the Overall totals as well bumping STA ahead of St Rita, originally reported as the 3rd place team overall.

Individual awards were also presented at the conclusion of the meet. Nikki Hansen, St Monica claimed the Meet MVP as well as Season MVP by garnering 34 and 96 points respectively. Hansen excelled in the High Jump and 200 meters all season. Claire Glennon, SPX, earned 91 points to take the season Runner-Up award while Jamie Abercrombie, SPX, had 28 points to claim the Meet runner up plaque. Four of the top six point getters on the girls' side were from SPX, truly amazing!! For the boys, Brad Benjamin, St Elizabeth, had 30 & 91 points for the Meet and Season to take both MVP awards. Benjamin was a force in the 400 and 4 x 400 as well as chipping in on several other events. Sean McCormick, St Bernard, earned 28.5 and 82.5 points respectively to take the runner-up awards, with his specialty being the 800 & 1600 meters.

The Varsity Track season opens on Saturday, April 26th at Bishop Lynch and culminates with the Varsity Championship Meet on Saturday, May 17th, at Jesuit Prep.
